Summer Camp Programs 2010!
A great rapport between the Camp Counselors and campers
made for a great experience overall at the 2010 summer children's camps at
the Labrador Christian Youth Camp. Every week was very busy and so much
fun. Following bible study, a walk to the overlook to enjoy a snack was
always enjoyable. Afternoon activities that campers participated in
included tie-dying t-shirts, volleyball matches in the sand, taking
digital pictures of anything usual or unusual, and exploring around the
campsites for various insects, flowers or vegetation. In the open
exploration of the tiniest details of God's creation up close and
personal, campers marveled at how dependent we are on God in everything we
see and do. The children had a great time renewing old friendships and
making new ones, and learned the skill of cooperation through working with
others on different projects. Swimming was popular and canoeing was a big
hit.
Each evening when the weather permitted, we held a bonfire by
the lake, sharing stories and roasting marshmallows. Often times, guest
musicians brought special music during the camp fire.
The Teen and
the Wilderness camping weeks were combined due to numbers registered, and
it proved to be an amazing week for all. The week began with the
leadership and self-reliance preparation of the older campers-16-17 years
old. On Monday morning, our expert wilderness guides, Natasha and Trevor
Kennedy (and their trusty dog) led a two-day canoe excursion down the
Goose River. The kids were reported to have 'pulled their load', and
quickly developed a respect for their surroundings and the challenge of
not having the conveniences of home nearby.
The young teens
experienced a week of bible study, volleyball, hiking, swimming, canoeing,
eating (and they eat a lot!) and collecting frogs. But perhaps the two
highlights of the week were creating friendships, and the day-long canoe
trip excursions. The challenge of having to rely upon themselves seemed to
build their confidence over the week. On Thursday night for all camps, we
held an outdoor barbecue that everyone enjoyed.
The 2010 camping
year with the children and teens proved to be highly successful, and the
high school-age counselors worked hard and effectively fulfilled their
duties, as well as built leadership skills that they can use in all
endeavors of their lives. The staff communicated well with each other, and
I believe they found new friendships as well.
We were thankful that
there were no major challenges even though some campers had high awareness
needs; like critical allergies and a congenital heart defect. It was a
privilege to serve the Labrador Christian Youth Camp (LCYC) this year as
their director. It was a tremendous opportunity to better get to know the
people of Labrador and to serve God in such an amazing outdoor
setting.
